Avelo Airlines, a Houston-based budget carrier, is facing significant backlash over its decision to operate deportation flights for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The airline’s agreement to run these flights from Mesa Gateway Airport in Arizona has sparked protests, boycotts, and political criticism across multiple states.
Flight attendants’ unions have also raised safety concerns regarding the transportation of detainees in restraints, arguing that such conditions could hinder emergency responses during flights.
Avelo’s CEO, Andrew Levy, defended the decision by citing financial stability and the need to maintain employment for over 1,100 staff members. He acknowledged the sensitivity of the issue but emphasized the importance of the charter flights for the airline’s operational sustainability.
In Las Vegas, where Avelo maintains a presence, Indivisible Las Vegas is leading the charge with a protest at in front of The Bellagio on May 31, 2025 from 5-7pm.
